GENERAL INFORMATION / BUILDING

In 1984 the old convent of Santa Mňnica, founded in 1636, was declared an historical monument of national interest and converted into an exhibition gallery under the auspices of the Generalitat de Catalunya.
The building was restored by the architects Helio Pińon and Albert Viaplana, whose project set out to conserve the
historic traces of successive additions and remodellings since the seventeenth century while introducing contemporary materials and services. The most striking new element?and the one that characterizes the building today?is the access ramp on the façade, which affords a privileged view of the Rambla and provides a spacious open balcony
that communicates the exterior with the interior. In this, its latest phase, the building is the subject of a new rehabilitation scheme by Albert and David Viaplana.
